Guinand, Gallet and Excelsior Park

Vintage Sinn – More than just a watch. A story.

Behind many historic Sinn chronographs are stories that only reveal themselves at a closer look. Stories of personal relationships, exceptional craftsmanship and a time when mechanical watches were still uncompromising instruments built for precision and reliability.

During the early 1970s, Helmut Sinn used his excellent connections within the Swiss watch industry to source high-quality chronograph movements and cases. Through these relationships, important connections developed with renowned manufacturers and suppliers such as Guinand, Gallet and Excelsior Park – names that represent some of the most significant mechanical chronographs of their era.

Guinand – A Reliable Partner and Longstanding Companion

One of Helmut Sinn’s most important partners was the Swiss company Guinand Watch Co. The collaboration between the two companies was built over decades on trust, mutual respect and a shared understanding of creating functional, high-quality timepieces.

From the mid-1960s through the 1990s, Guinand manufactured a significant number of watches for Sinn. Over many years, Helmut Sinn sourced a large proportion of the required cases and components from Guinand. This close relationship became an essential part of the early development of Sinn Spezialuhren and enabled the creation of high-quality mechanical chronographs with reliability and efficiency.

Over the decades, this partnership continued to evolve. In 1995, Helmut Sinn acquired the shares of Guinand S.A. from the Guinand family and continued the Swiss production operations. During this period, watches were also manufactured for other brands. In 2000, production in Switzerland for external brands was discontinued, and the manufacturing of the company’s own brands Guinand, Chronosport and Jubilar was relocated to Germany.

The Connection to Gallet and Excelsior Park

One of the most fascinating chapters is the connection between early Sinn Pilot Chronographs and the legendary Gallet MultiChron Pilot models. Technical details, case designs and the use of high-quality chronograph movements reveal a shared heritage from an era when functionality and reliability were the highest priorities.

Rather than being a traditional cooperation in today’s sense, this relationship was built on a unique network of personal connections, shared suppliers and an uncompromising passion for precise timekeeping.

For Helmut Sinn, prestige was never the primary goal. His vision was to create reliable and functional watches – timepieces designed to serve their purpose and perform under demanding conditions. This philosophy became a defining element of Sinn Spezialuhren.

These chronographs were not merely luxury objects. They were instruments – created for pilots, professionals and anyone who valued precision.

Today, these vintage Sinn watches tell the story of a remarkable era: Swiss watchmaking expertise, German engineering philosophy and the vision of a man who did not simply want to sell watches – he wanted to make them better.

This unique heritage is what makes many historic Sinn chronographs so fascinating to collectors and enthusiasts today. They combine the tradition of Swiss chronograph craftsmanship with Helmut Sinn’s uncompromising functional approach – preserving a piece of watchmaking history on the wrist.

SINN Decimal MultiChron 12H

Sinn MultiChron Decimal

The Sinn Decimal is a unique variant of the MultiChron series.

The timekeeping functions are designed for applications in medicine, industry, sports, and science, divided into minutes and tenths of minutes.

The decimal division can be used for statistical analysis or for calculating the cost of a work process. The decimal scale divides an hour into increments of 100 and 10 instead of the traditional 60 divisions.

For example, the chronograph is activated when a work process starts or ends. The time of the process can now be read directly on the dial, and the cost per minute can be calculated.

Due to its specialized use, relatively small quantities of this rare watch were produced.
